We've seen pictures collated together moving so fast that it looks like it was moving. This was the way motion pictures first developed. But who knew millions of photographs taken of the Earth by satellites, ariel photographay, and GIS data could be superimposed to create a 3D globe showcasing Earth in all it's beauty so that we can virtually visit anywhere, anytime?
Google Earth is a computer programe that allows visualization, assessment, overlay, and creation of geospatial data. This user-friendly resource is often a useful intermediary for learners who are interested in learning more about GIS and want to start with more basic processes and tools. Google Earth Pro can also be leveraged to view its extremely high-resolution satellite imagery, upload or download geospatial data in its native interoperable fileformat (KML), and also find locations (e.g. for simple geocoding).
Dating back to 1984, Google Earth features 3D reconstructions, annotation tools and satellite imagery provided by NASA from the late 1900s, allowing users to virtually travel back in time. As new images become available via satellite and aerial imagery, the map is constantly updated to reflect our ever-changing world. It also offers tools for creating new data and a growing set of layers of data, such as volcanoes and terrains around the globe.
Even though, it isn't as true GIS, Google Earth has the potential to be a valuable tool. Let's explore this incredible expanse of the earth and understand how Google Earth can help us in understanding the world better.
